History of Stone Bank
Stone Bank was first settled in 1842. Early settlers built mills to grind grain and cut wood. By 1858, the community had a post office. A blacksmith shop and a grocery store also opened. Churches and a cemetery were established around this time.
Community Services and Education
Fire and Emergency Services
For over 100 years, Stone Bank had its own fire department. This department, started in 1907, helped the towns of Oconomowoc and Merton. It provided fire, emergency medical, and rescue services. The department responded to about 400 calls each year. In 2020, the Western Lakes Fire District took over these services.
Stone Bank School
Stone Bank School serves students from kindergarten (K4) through 8th grade. It is part of the Arrowhead Union School District. A diploma from Carl Eschweiler, whose father was a famous local architect, hangs in the school's front office.
Geography and Natural Features
Location and Lakes
Stone Bank is about 4.5 miles northeast of the city of Oconomowoc. It is located along Waukesha County Highways K and C. The community sits on the north shore of Okauchee Lake. It also has a lot of shoreline along Moose Lake.
Glacial Landscape
The land around Oconomowoc, including Stone Bank, was shaped by glaciers. It is part of the Kettle Moraine region of Southeastern Wisconsin. Both Okauchee and Moose lakes are "kettle lakes." This means they formed in depressions left by melting ice blocks from glaciers. All the nearby lakes are also kettle lakes.
Soil and Farming
The soil in Stone Bank is very rich. It contains clays and organic materials, making it good for farming. Farmers in Stone Bank often grow corn or alfalfa. However, as the nearby city of Milwaukee grows, more farmland is being divided into neighborhoods.
Prominent Ridges and Waterways
A large ridge stands between Moose Lake and Okauchee Lake. County Highway C runs along this ridge. It connects Nashotah to the Stone Bank Market. This market is near Pantheon Industries. Pantheon Industries helps people with disabilities find jobs. Downtown Stone Bank is bordered by this ridge on the east. On the west, another hill runs just west of Breezy Point Road. This hill ends at Breezy Point, a small spot on Okauchee Lake. At the bottom of the east hill is the Oconomowoc River. This stream flows through North Lake and joins Okauchee Lake in a marsh.
