The Stone Mill, also known as the Frog Hollow Stone Mill, is a very old building in Middlebury, Vermont. It's located at 3 Mill Street. Built in 1840, this building shows us a lot about how Middlebury used to make things. It's so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Today, the Stone Mill is a busy place! It has a restaurant, a public market, and even places for people to stay or work.

What is the Stone Mill?

The Stone Mill is a four-story building made from stone found nearby. It stands next to Otter Creek, a river that usually flows north but bends west right where the mill is. The building has a pointed roof. The front of the mill, which faces Mill Street, looks the same on both sides. It has special doors in the middle of each floor for loading things. Windows are on either side of these doors.

Inside the Mill

Over the years, the inside of the Stone Mill has changed a lot. This is because the building had several fires. These fires damaged parts of the mill, so it had to be rebuilt or fixed many times. Each time, new parts were added or old ones changed.

A Look Back: The Mill's History

People started using this spot for making things a long time ago. In 1789, the very first building here was a grist mill. A grist mill grinds grain, like wheat, into flour.

From Grain to Cotton

In 1812, the mill changed. It stopped grinding grain and started making cotton cloth. This was a big change for the area. In 1835, a company called the Middlebury Manufacturing Company was started. They built the Stone Mill we see today in 1840.

Changes Over Time

After it was built, the Stone Mill had many different owners. It also went through several fires, which meant parts of it had to be repaired or rebuilt. In the early 1970s, the town of Middlebury bought the mill. Now, it's a place where students from Middlebury College can create art. It's also home to other businesses, making it a lively part of the town.
