Middlebury is found in the northwest part of the town of Middlebury. It is built around a beautiful waterfall on Otter Creek. This creek is a key feature of the area.

A Look at Middlebury's Past

Many mills once lined the river in a spot called Frog Hollow. The old Stone Mill, built in 1840, is one of the few buildings left from that time. It reminds us of Middlebury's busy past.

Middlebury also became a major stop for stagecoaches. These coaches traveled north and south between cities like Burlington and Rutland. The town green, which is a central park area, is right on this historic route. Today, this route is United States Route 7.

The local Congregational Church, built between 1806 and 1809, is the oldest church in Addison County. It is a great example of Federal-style architecture. Middlebury College was founded in 1800. Its campus is located just southwest of the village center. Another important school was started in 1814 by Emma Willard. She opened a private school for women in her home on South Main Street.
