Stoney Nakoda First Nation

The Stoney Nakoda First Nation is a group of Nakoda (also known as Stoney) people. They are one of the many First Nations in Alberta, Canada. Their main community is located west of Calgary, near the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

The Stoney Nakoda First Nation is made up of three smaller Nakoda groups, often called 'tribes' or 'bands'. These three groups work together as part of the larger Stoney Nakoda Nation.

The Bearspaw First Nation is one of the three groups that form the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. They are also part of the Nakoda people living in Alberta.

In 2010, there was a disagreement about an election for the chief of the Bearspaw band. The chief at the time, David Bearspaw, wanted to cancel the election and stay in his role longer. However, other members of the band protested. A judge then decided that the election should happen. In the election, Darcy Dixon was chosen as the new chief.

The Goodstoney First Nation is the third group that makes up the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. This group is also known as the Wesley First Nation. They are part of the Nakoda people living in Alberta.

Stoney Nakoda Reserves

Indian Reserves are special areas of land set aside for First Nations people in Canada. The Stoney Nakoda First Nation manages several reserves that are shared by its three groups.

Here are some of the main reserves:

  • Stoney 142, 143, 144: This is the largest reserve, located about 56 kilometers west of Calgary. It covers a large area of land.
  • Stoney 142B: This reserve is about 48 kilometers northwest of Calgary.
  • Big Horn 144A: This reserve is located in a different area, further north.
  • Eden Valley 216: This reserve is about 80 kilometers southwest of Calgary.
