Stonyfield Farm, also known as the Ebenezer Barrett Farm, is a very old farm in Wilton, New Hampshire. It was started in 1803 by Ebenezer Barrett. This farm is special because its buildings and layout show what a typical farm in the countryside looked like in the 1800s. Later, it became a "gentleman's farm," which means it was owned by someone who didn't work the land themselves but enjoyed the farm life. This farm is also famous because the well-known yogurt company, Stonyfield Farm, began here! The farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, which means it's an important historical site.

What Makes Stonyfield Farm Special?

The Stonyfield Farm covers about 159 acres of land. It's located in the countryside of northern Wilton and southern Lyndeborough. Most of the land is now covered with trees. However, there are still open fields around the main farm buildings.

Farm Buildings and History

The main farm area is at the end of Barrett Hill Road. An old road, called Old Coach Road, runs through the property. Parts of this old road still have stone walls next to them.

The farm has several important buildings:

  • An old brick farmhouse built in 1803. It's in the Federal style, which was popular for buildings back then.
  • A barn from the 1800s.
  • A garage that was added around 1920.
  • A greenhouse from about 1927. This greenhouse was moved to the farm around 1950.

Who Started the Farm?

The farm was started by Ebenezer Barrett in 1803. He moved to New Hampshire from Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Ebenezer Barrett and his family worked the farm for many years. Two more generations of his family lived and worked on the farm throughout the 1800s.

In the early 1900s, the farm changed. It became a "gentleman's farm." This meant it was owned by someone who enjoyed the farm but might not have done all the farming work themselves.

The Birthplace of Stonyfield Yogurt

In 1978, the farm was leased to a group called the Rural Education Center. This was a non-profit organization that taught people about farming. Samuel Kaymen ran this center. It was right here, on this historic farm, that the famous yogurt company, Stonyfield Farm, was founded!
