The Stop River is a small, slow-moving stream located in Medfield, Massachusetts. It also forms part of the border between the towns of Norfolk and Walpole. This river is known for its low-lying areas and marshy (swampy) sections.

Where Does the Stop River Flow?

The Stop River begins its journey near Highland Lake in Norfolk. From there, it flows north for about 9.3 miles (15 kilometers). Eventually, it joins the larger Charles River in Medfield. The water from the Stop River, along with the Charles River, finally drains into Boston Harbor. This means its water eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean!

Special Plants Along the River

Along the Stop River, you can find a special place called the Medfield Rhododendrons reservation. This area is protected and cared for by The Trustees of Reservations, a group that looks after important natural and historical places.

This reservation is home to a rare collection of Rhododendron maximum plants. These are a type of beautiful flowering shrub. Finding so many of them growing together in one spot, like along Woodridge Street in Medfield, is quite unusual and important for nature lovers.
