Strathmore, also known as An Srath Mòr, is a wide valley in northern Scotland. It is located in an area called Sutherland, near a sea loch named Loch Eriboll. A river called the Strathmore River flows through the valley, heading north into Loch Hope. On its eastern side, you will find a mountain called Ben Hope.

Strathmore is known for being the birthplace of Rob Donn, a famous Scottish Gaelic poet. It is also home to Dun Dornaigil, an ancient Iron Age building called a broch. Most people moved away from Strathmore in the early 1800s during a time known as the Highland Clearances.

Discovering Strathmore: A Scottish Valley

Strathmore is a beautiful and wide valley, often called a "strath" in Scotland. It is found in the northern part of the country. This area is part of the Durness parish. The valley stretches from north to south. A small road follows the Strathmore River, which flows along the valley floor. This river eventually reaches Loch Hope. To the east of the valley stands the impressive Ben Hope mountain.

What Makes Strathmore Special?

Strathmore is famous for a couple of interesting things. It is the birthplace of a well-known Scottish Gaelic poet named Rob Donn. He was born in a place called Aultnacaillich within the valley.

Another special site is Dun Dornaigil. This is an ancient building called a broch. Brochs are tall, round stone towers built by people in the Iron Age. Dun Dornaigil still stands about 6.7 meters (22 feet) high today.

In the early 1800s, many people who lived in Strathmore moved away. This period was part of the Highland Clearances. During this time, many families in the Scottish Highlands left their homes.

Nature and Wildlife in Strathmore

Strathmore is located on the western edge of the Ben Hope Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). An SSSI is a special area protected for its important plants, animals, or geology.
