Ben Hope (which is Beinn Hòb in Scottish Gaelic) is a famous mountain in northern Scotland. It is special because it is the most northerly Munro. A Munro is a Scottish mountain that is over 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) tall.
Ben Hope stands alone in an area called the Flow Country. This region has lots of bumpy, peat-covered land. The mountain looks like a rough triangle. It has a big, rocky cliff on its west side. You can find many beautiful alpine flowers growing here when they are in season.
Climbing Ben Hope
Climbing Ben Hope is a popular activity for hikers. The main way to reach the top starts in a place called Strathmore. This is to the west of the mountain. There is a small road where you can park your car.
The Main Path
The path follows a small stream called the Allt-na-caillich burn. This stream flows down through a gap in the rocky cliffs on the west side. The path is quite steep in places. However, it is well-marked with occasional piles of stones called cairns. It is not a dangerous climb.
Views from the Top
When you reach the summit of Ben Hope, you get amazing views. You can see the Pentland Firth, which is a strait of water. You can also see Loch Eriboll and other nearby mountains. These include Arkle and Foinaven. On a very clear day, you might even see the Orkney Islands far away.
Other Things to See
Just south of the Allt-na-caillich burn, along the Strathmore road, you can find something interesting. It is an ancient building called the Dùn Dornaigil Broch. A broch is an old, round stone tower from the Iron Age.
