Stringer is a small place in southwestern Jasper County, Mississippi, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Stringer is located where State Highway 15 and County Road 10 meet. It's also just north of Mississippi State Highway 533. You can find it between the towns of Bay Springs and Laurel. In 2010, about 1,867 people lived there.
History of Stringer
Stringer got its name from a person named John Stringer. He used to be the postmaster, which is the person in charge of the post office. Before it was called Stringer, the community had a different name: P.K.
Stringer was once located along the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad tracks. This railroad was very important for moving goods and people. The community officially became a town in 1905, but it later stopped being an official town. Around 1910, Stringer was a busy place. It had ten general stores where people could buy many different things. There was also a sawmill, which cut wood, and a drug store. A cotton gin, which separates cotton fibers from their seeds, also operated in Stringer.
The post office in Stringer first opened under the name P.K. in 1882. It changed its name to Stringer in 1895.
Education in Stringer
The main school in Stringer is called Stringer Attendance Center. The Mississippi Department of Education has given this school a high rating, calling it "High Performing." The school even planned to become a "Star School" for the 2011–2012 school year, which is a special recognition for excellent schools.
Famous People from Stringer
- L. C. Ulmer, a well-known delta blues singer, was born in Stringer. He was famous for his music style, which came from the Mississippi Delta region.
