How Stroud Mall Started
The idea for Stroud Mall first came up in May 1976. It was a project by Hess's and the Montgomery Development Company. The plan was for the mall to have Hess's and another large department store. It would also have about 40 smaller shops and a movie theater. Hess's was planned to open before the rest of the mall.
By October 1976, many stores had already agreed to open there. These included Endicott Johnson, DEB Shops, Kay Jewelers, and B. Dalton Booksellers. In early 1977, J.C. Penney was announced as the likely second main store. More shops like Walden Books and Thom McAn also joined.
Hess's had its grand opening on July 29, 1977. The entire mall officially opened on March 2, 1978. J.C. Penney, which signed its lease in September 1977, opened later in 1978.
Mall Changes Over the Years
New Stores and Renovations
In 1991, Sears became a new main store at the mall. This was part of a big $12 million expansion project. Like J. C. Penney, Sears moved from its old spot in downtown Stroudsburg.
In 1994, The Bon-Ton took over the Hess's store. This happened when Hess's chain was divided up. The mall also got a new look with a renovation in 2002.
Movie Theater and Recent Changes
The movie theater at the mall, which was a 7-screen Loews theater, closed in December 2010. It reopened in November 2011 as a larger 12-screen Cinemark theater.
On November 8, 2018, it was announced that the Sears store at Stroud Mall would close. It shut down by February 2019. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country.
ShopRite moved into the mall in November 2019. It took over the space where The Bon-Ton used to be. This also replaced the ShopRite store in downtown Stroudsburg. EFO Furniture Outlet opened a new store in the mall on January 24, 2020. It took over the first floor of the old Sears building.
