The subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) is a type of fur seal. It lives in the southern parts of the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. These seals spend most of their lives in the ocean. They come to land mainly to rest, breed, and raise their young pups.

What are Subantarctic Fur Seals?

Subantarctic fur seals are medium-sized seals. They belong to a group called eared seals. This means they have small, visible ear flaps, unlike "true seals" which only have ear holes. They are also known for their thick, two-layered fur coat. This special fur helps them stay warm in the cold ocean waters.

Where do they live?

These seals live in the waters around islands in the southern parts of the world. You can find them near islands like Gough Island, Marion Island, and Crozet Islands. They prefer cool, subantarctic waters. They often travel long distances in the ocean to find food.

What do they look like?

Subantarctic fur seals have a brownish-gray fur coat. Males are usually much larger than females. Adult males can weigh up to 160 kilograms (350 pounds) and be over 2 meters (6.5 feet) long. Females are smaller, weighing around 50 kilograms (110 pounds) and reaching about 1.4 meters (4.5 feet) in length. They have a pointed snout and long whiskers, which help them feel their way around underwater.

How do males and females differ?

Besides size, males have a darker, shaggy mane of fur around their neck and shoulders. Females have a lighter chest and belly. Young pups are born with a dark, almost black fur coat. This coat changes to the adult color after a few months.

What do they eat?

Subantarctic fur seals are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. Their main diet includes squid, octopus, and small fish. They are skilled hunters and can dive deep into the ocean to catch their prey. They use their strong flippers to swim quickly and gracefully underwater.

How do they behave?

These seals are very social animals. They gather in large groups, especially during the breeding season. On land, they can be quite noisy, making barks and growls to communicate. In the water, they are playful and curious. They spend a lot of time grooming their fur to keep it waterproof and warm.

Do they migrate?

After the breeding season, many subantarctic fur seals spread out across the ocean. They might travel thousands of kilometers to find good feeding grounds. Young seals often explore new areas before returning to their birth islands to breed.

Life cycle and reproduction

Subantarctic fur seals return to specific islands each year to breed. This usually happens in late spring or early summer. Males arrive first to claim territories. They are very protective of their space and will fight with other males.

How are pups born and raised?

Females give birth to a single pup about a week after arriving on land. The pups are born with their eyes open and can move around quickly. Mothers stay with their pups for about a week, feeding them rich milk. After this, the mother goes on short feeding trips to the sea, returning to nurse her pup every few days. Pups are usually weaned, meaning they stop drinking milk, when they are about four months old. They then learn to hunt for themselves.

Conservation status

The subantarctic fur seal population has recovered well after being heavily hunted in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, their numbers are stable. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as "Least Concern." This means they are not currently in danger of extinction. However, scientists continue to monitor their populations. They also study how climate change and ocean pollution might affect them in the future.
