Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya (born August 10, 1944 – died January 2, 2021) was an important Indonesian politician. He worked as the Minister of Cooperatives and Small Business. He served in this role from 1993 to 1998 under President Suharto.

Early Life and Education
Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya was born on August 10, 1944. His birthplace was Cilacap Regency in Indonesia. This was during the time when Japan occupied the Dutch East Indies. His parents, Soewarko and Rudiastuti, were from the Javanese ethnic group.
He started elementary school in Cilacap in 1953. He finished there in 1956. He then went to State Junior High School No. 1 in Cilacap from 1956 to 1959. After that, he attended State High School No. 1 in Cilacap until 1962.
After high school, he moved to Jakarta. He studied economics at the Christian University of Indonesia. He was a student there from 1962 to 1972.
Career Beginnings
After graduating from university, Tjakrawerdaya started working. He became a board member at a private business. He worked there until 1978.
Then, he began a career in government. He joined the Junior Ministry of Cooperation. His first role was as an expert staff member.
In 1983, the ministry became a full department. Tjakrawerdaya was promoted. He became the Head of the Planning Bureau for the Department of Cooperation. In September 1987, he was promoted again. He became the Director General of Cooperative Business Development.
In 1985, Tjakrawerdaya attended the National Resilience Institute. He finished his studies there in 1986. He was one of the top three graduates.
Minister of Cooperatives and Small Business
On March 17, 1993, President Suharto announced his new government. Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya was chosen as the Minister of Cooperatives and Small Business. He served in Suharto's sixth cabinet.
His term ended, but he was appointed again. On March 14, 1998, he became minister in Suharto's seventh cabinet. He stayed in this role until Suharto resigned on May 21, 1998.
As minister, Tjakrawerdaya worked closely with Suharto's family. He allowed Tommy Suharto, the president's youngest son, to control the clove trade in Indonesia. This meant Tommy Suharto had a monopoly on cloves.
In 1996, Tjakrawerdaya ran for a seat in the People's Representative Council. He was a candidate for the Lampung area. He won the election and became a member of parliament on October 1, 1997.
For a short time, he was both a minister and a member of parliament. He gave up his parliament seat after being appointed minister for the second time.
Later Political Roles
After President Suharto stepped down, the National Awakening Party was formed. Tjakrawerdaya joined this new party. He became a representative for East Java in the People's Consultative Assembly. He held this position from October 1, 1999.
On November 30, 1999, President Abdurrahman Wahid created the National Economic Council. This council was formed to help Indonesia with its financial problems. Tjakrawerdaya was named the deputy chairman of this council.
Some economists from the University of Indonesia and Gadjah Mada University disagreed with his appointment. They pointed to his past role in Suharto's government. President Wahid explained that the council only gave advice. It could not make direct decisions for the president.
In the 2004 Indonesian legislative election, Tjakrawerdaya ran for the Regional Representative Council. He was a candidate for the Central Java area. He received 315,191 votes. This was about 2.01% of the total votes. However, he did not win a seat in this election.
Awards and Recognition
Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya received an award in 1986. It was called the Development Medal (Satyalancana Pembangunan). This award recognized his contributions to development.
Passing Away
Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya became sick with COVID-19. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. He was taken to the Simprug Extension Hospital. This hospital was set up to treat COVID-19 patients. Tjakrawerdaya passed away at the hospital on January 2, 2021, at 11:15 PM.
