Suchitra Bhattacharya (born January 10, 1950 – died 2015) was a famous writer from India. She was known for her many novels and short stories. Some of her popular books include Hemanter Pakhi, Kachher Manush, and Dahan.
Suchitra Bhattacharya wrote over 20 novels and many short stories during her career. Several of her books were even turned into movies. For example, her novel Dahan became a film in 1997. Other books like Iccher Gach and Alik Sukh were also made into movies.

Early Life and School Days
Suchitra Bhattacharya was born in 1950 in a place called Bhagalpur, in Bihar, India. From a very young age, she loved to write stories.
She went to college in Kolkata at Jogamaya Devi College. This college is part of the big and old University of Calcutta.
Her Journey as a Writer
Suchitra Bhattacharya worked different jobs when she was younger. Later, she joined a government job. In 2004, she decided to leave her job and become a full-time writer.
She started writing in the late 1970s. Her first novels came out in the mid-1980s. She became well-known early on with her novel Kacher Dewal, which means "Glass Wall."

Suchitra Bhattacharya's stories often talked about things happening in society today. She used her own life experiences to make her stories real and interesting. She admired other women writers like Ashapurna Debi and Mahasweta Debi, who greatly influenced her writing.
Her books and short stories have been translated into many different languages. These include Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, and English. She also wrote special novels and short stories just for children!

Many of Suchitra Bhattacharya's novels were made into popular films.
- Her novel Dahan became a movie in 1997. It was directed by a famous Bengali director, Rituparno Ghosh.
- The short story "Ichcher Gaach" (The Wish Tree) was made into a movie called Icche in 2011.
- Another book, "Hemonter Pakhi," also became a feature film.

The first book featuring Mitin Masi was Sarandai Saitan. After that, more adventures followed, like Sarporahosya sundarbone and Jhau jhien hotyarorosya.
Awards and Recognition
Suchitra Bhattacharya received many awards for her amazing writing. Here are some of them:
- In 1996, she won the Nanjanagudu Thirumalamba National Award.
- The Katha Award was given to her in 1997.
- She received the Tarashankar Award in 2000.
- In 2004, she got the Bhuban Mohini Medal from Calcutta University.
- She also won the Bharat Nirman Award and Sahitya Setu Award in 2004.
- In 2012, she was honored with the Mati Nandy award.
- Just before she passed away, in 2015, she received the Dinesh Chandra Smriti Puroskar.
Suchitra Bhattacharya passed away on May 12, 2015, when she was 65 years old. She died at her home in Kolkata.
