Sudarshan Agarwal (born June 19, 1931 – died July 3, 2019) was an important Indian public servant. He served as the Governor of two Indian states: Uttarakhand from 2003 to 2007 and Sikkim from 2007 to 2008.

Sudarshan Agarwal: A Life of Service

Sudarshan Agarwal had a long and impactful career in public service. He was known for his dedication to helping people. His work included important roles in the government and many social projects.

Early Life and Education

Sudarshan Agarwal was born in Ludhiana, a city in Punjab, India. He studied law and graduated with top honors. After finishing his education, he joined the judicial service in Punjab and Delhi in 1956. He worked as a judicial officer until 1971.

Working for the Government

In 1971, Mr. Agarwal joined the Rajya Sabha Secretariat. The Rajya Sabha is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. He held various important positions there.

Serving as Secretary General

In 1981, he became the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha. This is a very high position, like being the chief administrator of the Rajya Sabha. He held this role for 12 years. In 1986, he was also given the rank of a Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India.

After retiring from the Rajya Sabha, he joined the National Human Rights Commission. This commission works to protect human rights in India. He served there with the same rank as a judge of the Supreme Court until June 2001.

Becoming a Governor

On January 8, 2003, Sudarshan Agarwal became the second Governor of Uttarakhand. A Governor is the head of a state in India, representing the President. He served in Uttarakhand until October 2007.

Later, on August 19, 2007, he was appointed Governor of Sikkim. He officially took office on October 25, 2007. He served as Governor of Sikkim until July 2008.

Helping People and Communities

Beyond his government roles, Sudarshan Agarwal was deeply involved in social and charity work. He was the President of the Delhi Gymkhana Club for two years. He also played a big part in Rotary International.

From 1987 to 1989, he was a director for Rotary International, representing South-East Asia. He also chaired the Rotary Foundation India. Under his leadership, the Rotary Blood Bank was set up in New Delhi. This project cost over 5 crore rupees (a large sum of money).

Supporting Health and Education

Mr. Agarwal was very active in Rotary's efforts to end polio. He brought this spirit of helping others to Uttarakhand. He personally oversaw major projects in education and health in the state.

He started two important initiatives: "The Him Jyoti Foundation" and "Him Karuna." These projects are supported by The Loomba Foundation and the Jain Samaj. They work to help hundreds of bright students from remote areas of Uttarakhand. They aim to give these students hope and better opportunities.

He also helped establish a modern blood bank in Dehradun. This was done with support from ONGC and the Indian Medical Association. He worked hard to make public service honest and fair.

Family Life

Sudarshan Agarwal was married to Smt. Usha Agarwal. They had two children: a son named Rajiv Agarwal and a daughter named Ritu Agarwal. Both of his children are successful professionals in advertising and academics.

Mr. Agarwal was known for his kind and caring personality. He was committed to the highest standards of public service. He inspired many people who believed in the importance of honesty and good citizenship.
