Sue Richards (1958 – August 2, 2014) was a talented Canadian artist. She was also a community leader from Guelph, Ontario. Sue moved to Guelph in 1981 to study at the University of Guelph.
About Sue Richards
After finishing university, Sue helped make the Hillside Festival in Guelph much bigger. She was even in charge of the art part of the festival from 1990 to 1992.
Art for the Community
In 1998, Sue Richards received a special award. It was from a project called "Artist in Community." This project helped artists use their skills to help people. Sue was one of only eight artists in Canada to get this award.
Her project was called Art Jam. It was a creative workshop. Sue worked with groups like the AIDS Committee of Guelph and the Guelph Multicultural Centre. The Art Jam project helped people express themselves through art. Even after the main project ended in 2000, Art Jam continued. It became a workshop that taught creative leadership.
Awards and Recognition
In 2000, Sue was honored with the Arts and Culture Award. This award was part of the YMCA–YWCA 5th Women of Distinction Awards. Later, in 2003, she was the special guest chair for the same awards. This showed how much her community respected her work.
Facing Challenges
In 2008, Sue shared that she was living with Parkinson's disease. This is a health condition that affects movement. Her friends and community organized a benefit concert to support her.
Because of her health, Sue had to stop printing her yearly calendar. She was very open about her struggles. She wrote about women's health and her journey with Parkinson's disease on her blog. Sue Richards passed away on August 2, 2014, after a long battle with her illness.
