Sue Hays Whitesides is a brilliant Canadian scientist who loves math and computers! She is a professor emeritus (which means she's retired but still honored) of computer science at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. She even used to be the head of the computer science department there. Her special skills are in areas called computational geometry and graph drawing. These are like drawing pictures and solving puzzles using math and computers!

Sue's Journey in Science

Early Education and Degrees

Sue Whitesides earned her highest degree, a PhD in math, in 1975. She got this important degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her teacher and guide during her PhD studies was a smart person named Richard Bruck.

Teaching and Leadership Roles

Before she joined the University of Victoria, Sue taught at other famous universities. She shared her knowledge at Dartmouth College and McGill University. At McGill, she was even the director of the School of Computer Science for a few years, from 2005 to 2008. This means she was in charge of the whole computer science school!

Helping the Science Community

Leading Important Conferences

Sue Whitesides has also helped organize big events for other scientists. She was the main person in charge of the program for the 1998 International Symposium on Graph Drawing. This is a special meeting where experts talk about how to draw graphs using computers. She also helped lead the program for the 2012 Symposium on Computational Geometry, another big meeting for scientists who work with shapes and computers.
