About Sujata Bhatt's Life
Sujata Bhatt was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. She grew up in Pune until 1968. Then, her family moved to the United States. She studied at the University of Iowa and earned a special degree called an MFA. For a while, she was a "writer-in-residence" at the University of Victoria in Canada. This means she was a writer who lived and worked at the university, often teaching or sharing her skills.
Sujata Bhatt has won several awards for her poetry. In 1987, her first book, Brunizem, won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (for Asia) and the Alice Hunt Bartlett Prize. She also received a Cholmondeley Award in 1991 and the Italian Tratti Poetry Prize in 2000.
She has also translated poems from the Gujarati language into English. These translations were for a book called Penguin Anthology of Contemporary Indian Women Poets. Sujata Bhatt often mixes Gujarati and English in her own poems. This makes her poetry feel very Indian, rather than just English. A poet named Michael Schmidt (poet) once said that her poems are "fast-moving" and "softly spoken." Sujata Bhatt now lives in Bremen, Germany, with her husband, Michael Augustin, who is also a writer, and their daughter.
