Sukharev Tower facts for kids
The Sukharev Tower was a famous building in the center of Moscow, Russia. It was built between 1692 and 1701. The architect who designed it was Mikhail Chugolokov Ivanovich.
Sadly, the tower was destroyed in 1934. The Soviet government, led by Joseph Stalin, ordered its destruction. They wanted to make space for a new road called Garden Avenue (also known as The Garden Ring). Many people and architects in Russia were against this decision.
When it was first built, the Sukharev Tower was like a grand Triumphal Gate. It honored the Tsar, who had ended a conflict with his sister, Sophia Alexeyevna Romanova, over the throne. The tower was named after Lorenti Pankerevich Soharb. He was a commander in the army at that time.
Over the years, the tower had different uses. Until 1921, it was home to the School of Mathematics and Navigation of Moscow. After that, it became the Moscow City Hall. It also housed the "Moscow History Museum" for a while. The tower was built in a special Russian architectural style called Naryshkin Baroque.
