Early Months: January to June
- March 1 – The famous Salem Witch Trials began in Salem Village, Massachusetts. Three women were accused of witchcraft, starting a difficult period for the community.
- June 8 – In Mexico City, a large crowd became angry during a time of food shortage. They set fire to the Viceroy's palace and some important old documents. Luckily, a royal geographer named Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora managed to save many papers and paintings.
- June 10 – During the Salem Witch Trials, Bridget Bishop was the first person to be hanged after being found guilty of witchcraft.

- September 8 – A strong earthquake, about 5.8 on the Richter scale, shook the area of Brabant. People felt the earthquake across many countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, and England.
- September 14 – Diego de Vargas led Spanish settlers back to the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico. They were returning after being away for 12 years because of the Pueblo Revolt in 1680.
