Sula is a small community in Ravalli County, Montana, in the United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially set up as one. Sula was officially recognized as a CDP around 2010. In 2020, only 41 people lived there.
A Look at Sula's Past
The area where Sula is located was first called Ross's Hole. This name came from Alexander Ross, a fur trader from the Hudson's Bay Company. He traveled through this valley in the spring of 1824.
Later, in 1889, settlers created a post office in the area. They decided to name it Sula. The name Sula comes from Ursula Thompson, who was said to be the first non-Native American child born in Ross's Hole.
Where is Sula?
Sula is located in the southern part of Ravalli County, Montana. You can find it along U.S. Route 93. This highway is a main road that runs through the area.
The community sits next to the East Fork of the Bitterroot River. It's also at the western edge of a wide valley called Ross' Hole. This valley is surrounded by tall mountains, making for beautiful scenery.
- To the north, it's about 35 miles (56 km) to Hamilton. Hamilton is the main town in Ravalli County.
- To the south, it's about 58 miles (93 km) over Lost Trail Pass to Salmon, Idaho.
Size of Sula
According to the United States Census Bureau, the Sula CDP covers a total area of about 3.3 square miles (8.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 3.27 square miles (8.5 square kilometers). A small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.1 square kilometers), is water.

Sula has a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means it has big changes in temperature throughout the year.
