Sulphur City is a small place in Arkansas, United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Sulphur City is in Washington County, near the Middle Fork of the White River. You can find it where Black Oak Road and Whitehouse Road meet. Another community, Black Oak, is about 1.5 miles away across the river. Sulphur City used to be known by other names: Sulphur Springs and Mankins.
A Look Back at Sulphur City
The first person to settle in this area was Peter Mankins Sr. He had a successful business raising animals. This was before the American Civil War started.
In 1882, a post office was built here. It was first named Sulphur Springs. But there was already another place called Sulphur Springs in Benton County. So, the name was changed to Mankins.
Soon after that, the community got its current name, Sulphur City. The post office served the area for many years. It finally closed down in 1960.
