Exploring the Sulphur River's Path
The Sulphur River starts when two smaller rivers, its North Fork and South Fork, meet. This meeting point is called a confluence. It happens near the border of Delta and Lamar counties in Texas.
Where the River Begins
The river's start is about 4.7 miles (7.6 km) northeast of a town called Sulphur Bluff. It's also about 95 miles (153 km) northeast of Dallas. The river begins downstream from the Cooper Lake dam.
Journey Through Texas
From its start, the Sulphur River generally flows towards the east. It passes through several counties in Texas. This river is the main source of water for Wright Patman Lake. This large lake sits on the border between Bowie and Cass counties.
After flowing out of Wright Patman Dam, the river keeps moving east. It continues its journey until it reaches the state line of Arkansas.
Flowing into Arkansas
Once in Arkansas, the Sulphur River turns to flow southeast. It travels through Miller County for about 15 miles (24 km). Finally, it flows into the Red River. This meeting point is east of Doddridge, just a few miles north of the Louisiana border.
Fun Activities on the Sulphur River
The Sulphur River offers many chances for outdoor fun. You can enjoy fishing, boating, and other activities along its waters.
Recreation Above Wright Patman Lake
Above Wright Patman Lake, the river usually has enough water for recreation. The water moves slowly and can look a bit cloudy. This is partly because the river's path has been changed in some areas upstream.
Recreation Below Wright Patman Dam
Below Wright Patman Dam, how much water flows depends on the dam's release. However, the water quality here is usually good.
Enjoying Wright Patman Lake
Wright Patman Lake itself provides even more opportunities for adventure. You can go camping, boating, swimming, and fishing there. It's a great spot for families and friends to spend time outdoors.
