History of Sumner
Sumner began as a stop along the Ohio and Mississippi Railway in the early 1850s. It was first called "Black Jack" when its post office opened in 1852. The city was later renamed in 1855 after Benjamin Sumner, an early settler in the area. Sumner officially became an incorporated city in 1887.
Geography and Location
Sumner is situated along Illinois State Route 250. It is just south of where Route 250 meets U.S. Route 50 to the north. Red Hills State Park is a short distance to the northeast of the city. According to the 2010 census, Sumner covers a total land area of about 1.37 square miles (3.55 square kilometers).

Sumner in the Arts
From 2011 to 2013, a horror film called Unlisted Owner was filmed in and around Sumner. This movie used a "found footage" style. It was made by Jed Brian's company, Lawford County Productions. The film later received a distribution agreement in October 2016.
