History of Sumpter

The Town of Sumpter was not always known by its current name. It was first called "Kingston." However, there was another community in Wisconsin already named Kingston. This caused confusion.

When the Civil War began, the town's name was changed. It was renamed "Sumter" to honor the Battle of Fort Sumter. This battle was a very important event at the start of the war.

But, a mistake happened when the name was put on an early map. The spelling was changed from "Sumter" to "Sumpter." This is how the town got its unique name today.
