The Sun Building is an important old building in Washington, D.C.. It is also known as the Baltimore Sun Building or the American Bank Building. You can find it at 1317 F Street, in the Downtown Washington, D.C. area.

The Sun Building's Story
This special building has a long and interesting history. It was built a long time ago and has been used for many different things.
Building History
The Sun Building was designed by a famous architect named Alfred B. Mullett. Construction started in 1885 and finished in 1887. John H. Howlett was the builder.
It was first built for the Washington office of a newspaper called The Baltimore Sun. This newspaper needed a place for its reporters and staff in the nation's capital.
Changes Over Time
When it was first built, the nine-story building had steam elevators. These were replaced with hydraulic elevators in 1909. Later, in 1922, electric elevators were installed, which were much more modern.
In 1904, the building was changed by B. Stanley Simmons. This was done for the American Bank, which moved into the building. In 1907, a ninth story was added. This new floor became a hearing room for the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Famous People and Groups
Many important groups and people have worked in the Sun Building. It was a busy place for government and business.
- The Interstate Commerce Commission used parts of the building. This group helped to make rules for things like trains and trucks.
- Woodrow Wilson's law firm had offices there. Woodrow Wilson later became the 28th President of the United States.
- Daniel C. Roper also worked in the building. He was a government official who held many important jobs.
- The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also had offices in the Sun Building. The FBI is a main law enforcement agency in the United States.
A Historic Landmark
The Sun Building was recognized as a special historic place on March 27, 1985. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is protected because of its importance to history. In 2009, the building was valued at nearly $14 million.
