Sun Zhengcai (Chinese: 孙政才; born September 25, 1963) is a former Chinese politician. He held important leadership roles in China. From 2012 to 2017, Sun was the top leader of Chongqing, a large city in China. He was also a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, a group of very important leaders. Before this, he led Jilin province and was the Minister of Agriculture for China.

In July 2017, Sun was suddenly removed from his job. He was investigated for breaking rules and misusing his power. He was later removed from the Chinese Communist Party. In 2018, he was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to prison. Sun was the youngest member of the Politburo at the time. He was once thought to be a future top leader in China.

Sun's Early Career

Sun Zhengcai was born in September 1963. He grew up in a farming family in a village near Rongcheng, Shandong province. In 1980, he went to agricultural college. He studied farming and earned master's degrees in agronomy, which is the science of soil management and crop production. After his studies, he worked at an institute, doing research and becoming an administrator. He eventually became the executive vice president, managing the institute's daily work.

Sun joined the Chinese Communist Party in July 1988. In 1997, he became a leader in Shunyi County, a rural area near Beijing. When Shunyi became an urban district, Sun continued his leadership role. In 2002, he became the top Party leader of the Shunyi District. Later that year, at 39, he joined the Beijing party committee, becoming a high-ranking official. From 2002 to 2006, he was the secretary-general of the Beijing party. In December 2006, he was chosen to be the Minister of Agriculture. At 43, Sun was one of the youngest ministers in China's government at that time.

Leading in Jilin and Chongqing

In November 2009, Sun became the top Party leader of Jilin province in northeast China. In November 2012, after an important Party meeting, he was appointed to the Politburo. He then became the Party chief of Chongqing, replacing another leader. The job in Chongqing was very important. Sun's appointment showed that he was trusted by the central leadership. It also suggested he might move to even higher positions in the future. Chongqing had recently faced political challenges, and Sun's role was to bring stability.

In Chongqing, Sun introduced a plan called "Five Great Capability Areas." This plan divided Chongqing into five parts to manage resources better. In January 2016, China's top leader, Xi Jinping, visited Chongqing. He praised the city's progress. This led many to believe that Sun had Xi's support for future promotions.

However, in February 2017, things changed for Sun. A team investigating officials said that Chongqing had not fully dealt with past political issues. This was seen as a criticism of Sun's leadership. In May, Sun publicly supported Xi Jinping and promised to fix the issues. In June 2017, the police chief of Chongqing, who was from the same area as Sun, was removed from his job.

On July 15, 2017, it was announced that Sun would be replaced as Chongqing's Party secretary by Chen Min'er. Sun was not present at the meeting where this was announced. There was also no mention of his work in Chongqing, which was unusual. These signs suggested that Sun's political career was ending.

Why Sun Left Office

On July 24, 2017, it was announced that Sun was being investigated for breaking party rules. This was a big deal because he was a sitting member of the Politburo. Before Sun, only a few other Politburo members had been investigated since 1990. Many people thought Sun was being prepared for a very high leadership position because he was relatively young and had experience in different roles. The investigation ended his political career.

After the investigation was announced, many Party groups across the country quickly stated their support for the decision. This included Chongqing, Jilin, and the Ministry of Agriculture, places where Sun had worked.

Removed from the Party

On September 29, 2017, the investigation results were announced. Sun was accused of not following Party values and rules. He was said to have misused his power and accepted gifts. The report also stated that he was "highly bureaucratic, lazy and ineffective." It said he was "suspected of criminal wrongdoing" because he accepted valuable items and used his power to benefit others. The Party stated that Sun had caused "great damage" and a "very bad impact on society." Sun was immediately removed from the Chinese Communist Party and from public service.

After Sun's removal, leaders in Jilin province, where he once worked, criticized his time there. They said Sun "did not care about issues and the development of Jilin" and only focused on getting promoted. This, they said, damaged the province's political environment.

In February 2018, Sun was charged with corruption by prosecutors in Tianjin. He admitted to the charges in court in April 2018. On May 8, 2018, Sun was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to prison.

Sun was a member of the 17th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the 18th Central Committee until his removal.

About Sun's Life

Sun was married to Hu Ying, a professor. She also held a senior position at a bank. They had one child.

Reports mentioned that Sun had a special robe in his home and would pray to it. It was also reported that Sun enjoyed playing a mobile video game called King of Glory. He would sometimes play the game before meetings and make his assistants wait while he finished a game in his car.
