Sunanda Patnaik (born November 7, 1934 – died January 19, 2020) was a famous Indian classical singer. She was from Odisha, India. People often called her "guruma," which means "teacher mother." She was known as one of the most important singers of Hindustani music, a type of classical music from Northern India.
Sunanda was the daughter of Baikunthanath Patnaik, a well-known poet. She started singing on All India Radio in Cuttack when she was just 14 years old in 1948. Her beautiful voice impressed many people.
Her Musical Journey
Sunanda Patnaik's talent was noticed early on. The Governor of Odisha heard her sing on the radio and was very impressed. She often performed for guests at the Governor's house.
Later, the President of India, Rajendra Prasad, heard her sing in Puri. He was so amazed that he helped her get special training. She studied music under Pandit Vinayak Rao Pattavardhan in Pune with a scholarship. In 1956, she earned a Master's degree in Music.
Performing and Recognition
In 1957, Sunanda performed at a big music festival in Calcutta. There, she received 13 gold coins for her amazing singing. After this, she performed many concerts both in India and around the world.
She was especially famous for her "tarana" style of singing, which she performed very quickly. She was also known for her unique way of singing Odissi music, a traditional music style from Odisha. From 1983, she lived in Kolkata.
Awards and Honors
Sunanda Patnaik received many awards for her contributions to music.
- She won the Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy award in 1970 and 1971.
- In 2009, she received an Indian lifetime achievement award.
- The Orissa Society of the Americas (OSA) also gave her a lifetime achievement award in 2012.
- She received the Sangeet Natak Academy award (Tagore Academy Puraskar) in 2012.
She also received honorary degrees:
- Utkal University gave her a Doctor of Literature degree in 1999.
- The Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal gave her a Doctor of Music degree in 1975.
In October 2020, the Odisha Government honored her by renaming an award after her. The award for excellence in classical music, given by the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademy, is now called 'Sunanda Samman'.
