Sunnyside is a small, unincorporated community located in Umatilla County, Oregon, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but it's still a recognized area where people live. Sunnyside is found about 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of Milton-Freewater. It sits right where two roads meet: Oregon Route 332 (also called the Sunnyside-Umapine Highway) and Oregon Route 339.

A Look at Sunnyside's Past

Sunnyside has an interesting history, especially when it comes to transportation and industry. It was once an important stop along the Walla Walla Valley Railway. This railway was very helpful for local farmers. It allowed them to transport their fresh fruit from nearby orchards to other places.

Wood Industry in Sunnyside

For a time, Sunnyside was also home to businesses that worked with wood. From 1958 to 1963, a company called Nebraska Bridge Supply and Lumber Co. had a planing mill here. A planing mill is a factory where rough lumber is smoothed and shaped. This process makes the wood ready for building or other uses.

Another company, Inland Fir Company, also operated a sawmill in Sunnyside. A sawmill is where logs are cut into planks and beams. These pieces of wood are then used for construction and other projects. These mills were important for the local economy, providing jobs and products.
