Sunset Beach is a cool beach town. It is in Orange County, California. This community is part of Huntington Beach.

It started on September 8, 1904. Oil was found nearby in 1920. This helped the town grow. In 2011, Sunset Beach officially joined Huntington Beach. It used to be its own small area. The town is right on the Pacific Coast Highway. It sits between the ocean and Huntington Harbour. It is only about 5 feet above sea level.

History of Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach was founded in 1904. It grew a lot after oil was found in the Huntington Beach Oil Field in 1920.

In 2010, the city council of Huntington Beach voted to make Sunset Beach part of their city. This change officially happened in August 2011.

Sunset Beach is a small area. It covers about 0.2 square miles (0.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. A small part is water.

People of Sunset Beach

In 2010, about 971 people lived in Sunset Beach. Most residents were White. There were also people of Asian, Native American, and African American backgrounds. About 8% of the people were Hispanic or Latino.

Most people lived in homes. There were 515 households in total. Some had children. Many were single people living alone. The average household had about two people.

The population included people of all ages. About 10% were under 18 years old. Many residents were between 45 and 64 years old. The average age was about 47.

Fun Things to Do in Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach has several restaurants and bars. One famous place is Captain Jack's. It was started by Jack Haley Sr., a well-known surfer. He was the father of basketball player Jack Haley.

Arts and Culture in Sunset Beach

The Sunset Beach Art Festival happens every year. It is held on Mother's Day weekend. Local women started it in 1948. They wanted to support education and community activities. It was first called the Beachcomber's Carnival. This festival raises a lot of money. All the money goes to help charities.

Parks and Recreation in Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach has one of the widest beaches in Southern California. Next to the beach is the Green Belt. This is a nice 14-acre park. People walk their dogs here. They also celebrate Mother's Day with the Art Festival.

Near Sunset Beach, you can find other cool places. To the southeast is Bolsa Chica State Beach. To the east is Huntington Harbour. To the north are the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach and the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge.

How Sunset Beach Works

Sunset Beach does not have mail delivery to homes. People pick up their mail at the main post office. They can also use private post office boxes. The main Post Office has a special wall mural. It was painted by local artist Katy Brack.

The Sunset Beach Sanitary District handles waste. The Huntington Beach Police Department provides safety. The Huntington Beach Fire Department helps with emergencies. The town also has active community groups. These include the Sunset Beach Community Association, the Woman's Club, and Las Damas.
