Supatá is a small town and a municipality in Colombia. It is located in the Gualivá Province, which is part of the Cundinamarca region. Supatá is about 76 kilometers (47 miles) north of Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. It shares borders with other towns like Pacho, Vergara, Subachoque, La Vega, and San Francisco.

History and Geography

Before the Spanish arrived in Colombia, the area around Supatá was home to the Panche people. The name Supatá comes from the Chibcha language, and it means "low and fertile land." This makes sense because the town is located on the edge of the Bogotá savanna, which is a relatively low area. Supatá is about 1,780 meters (5,840 feet) above sea level. However, some parts of the municipality are much higher, reaching up to 3,400 meters (11,155 feet).

The Mystery of Chía Cave

On a mountain called El Tablazo, which is 3,285 meters (10,778 feet) high in Supatá, there is a cave known as Cueva Chía. Chía was the Moon goddess of the Muisca people. The Muisca often had conflicts with the Panche people who lived in this area. Legend says that the Muisca people hid the treasures of their goddess Chía inside this cave to keep them safe.

What People Do in Supatá

The main way people in Supatá make a living is through agriculture. This means they grow crops. Some of the most important crops grown here include coffee, sugar cane, bananas, and yuca (also known as cassava).
