Place of origin | Michigan |
Superman is three-flavor ice cream that typically appears red, blue, and yellow typically found in the Midwestern United States, particularly Michigan and Wisconsin. The tricolor combination is named after Superman, the DC Comics superhero character, whose outfit comprises those colors.
The combination is commonly-believed to have originated in Detroit, Michigan at Stroh's Ice Cream during the Prohibition Era, however this isn't known to be definitively true. The exact flavor mixture isn't defined as well as the color scheme, with multiple producers having similarly-colored but differently-flavored combinations sold as Superman or under different brand names, as the ice cream brand name has never been licensed from DC Comics.
Many of the traditional versions call for Blue Moon, an even more obscure regional flavor, as the blue component of the swirl. Blue Moon has a hard-to-place flavor and, like the Superman flavor which often incorporates it, was created in the early 20th century.
