Superman (video game) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Superman is a video game released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64 console. In this game, you play as Superman, a famous superhero. Your main goal is to save Superman's friends from his biggest enemy, Lex Luthor. A lot of the game involves flying through rings. This game got many bad reviews from people who tested games. They called it "one of the worst games ever" because of its weak weapons, hard-to-use controls, and poor graphics.

How to Play the Game

In Superman, you control Superman and need to finish many tasks and puzzles. There are 14 levels in the game. Most levels are one of two types:

  • Flying Levels: In these levels, Lex Luthor makes Superman fly through many hoops. Superman also has to fight Luthor's bad guys, called Dark Shadows. He also saves people from dangers like cars crashing.
  • Escape Levels: In these levels, Superman finds one of his friends in a secret base belonging to Luthor. He then has to escape with them. These levels are more about action and solving puzzles.

The game has a "virtual Metropolis," which is like a fake city. The creators said it was filled with "Kryptonite fog." This was supposed to make Superman weaker. But it was really a trick to hide how the game couldn't show things far away.

The game also has two ways to play with friends:

  • Racing Mode: Up to four players can race spaceships.
  • Battle Mode: Players fight each other by throwing different items and weapons.

How the Game Was Made

The Superman game was first shown at a big event called E3 in 1997. Before the game came out, Eric Caen, who helped start Titus Software, said they wanted to make the first superhero game where players truly felt like a superhero.

After the Nintendo 64 version got bad reviews, Titus decided to make a new Superman game for the PlayStation. But Titus lost the rights from Warner Bros. to use the Superman character. Because of this, the PlayStation game was canceled in 1999.

A website called playstationmuseum.com got to see the PlayStation version. They said they expected it to be bad but were surprised. They found the graphics and animation to be "high quality" and gave the game a score of 90%.

Game Reviews

The Superman game got very negative reviews from critics. On a website called GameSpot, the game received a very low score of 1.3 out of 10. Another review site, GameRankings, said it was "one of the worst games of all time." Critics often pointed out that the weapons in some levels were "lame." They also said the controls were too complicated and the graphics were not good.
