Surjoux (pronounced soor-ZHOO) was once a small village, known in France as a commune. It is located in the eastern part of France, in a region called the Ain department.
On January 1, 2019, Surjoux joined with another village to form a new, larger commune called Surjoux-Lhopital. This means Surjoux is no longer a separate commune on its own.
Where is Surjoux?
Surjoux is found in the Ain department, which is in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes, including mountains and rivers.
The village is situated near the Rhône River, which is one of the major rivers in France. Being close to the river means the area often has green valleys and hills.
What is a Commune?
In France, a "commune" is the smallest unit of local government. Think of it like a town or a village. Each commune has its own mayor and local council.
These local governments manage things like schools, roads, and local services for the people living there. Surjoux was one of thousands of communes across France.
How Many People Live There?
Even though Surjoux is now part of a bigger commune, we can still look at its past population numbers. Like many small villages, its population can change over time.
Here's how the number of people living in Surjoux changed in recent years:
- In 2006, there were 73 people.
- In 2011, the population grew slightly to 77 people.
- By 2015, it went down a bit to 72 people.
- In 2021, after joining with Lhopital, the population for the former Surjoux area was recorded as 96 people.
These numbers show that Surjoux has always been a very small community.
A Bit of History
Villages like Surjoux often have a long history, with roots going back hundreds of years. They are typically farming communities or places that grew up around a local church or castle.
The merger of Surjoux into Surjoux-Lhopital is part of a trend in France. Many small communes are joining together to form larger ones. This helps them share resources and manage services more efficiently.
