Surte is a town located in Ale Municipality, Västra Götaland County, Sweden. In 2010, about 5,798 people lived there. The town is home to Surte Church.

Surte is situated about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of Gothenburg, a larger city in Sweden.

Surte's History and Landmarks

Surte has an interesting past, especially with its famous glass factory and a major natural event.

The Glass Factory

For many years, Surte was well-known for its glass factory. This factory started making glass in 1862. It grew to become one of the biggest and most modern glass factories in Sweden. A company called PLM [sv] bought the factory in 1960. However, the factory eventually closed down in 1978.

The 1950 Landslide

In 1950, a very large landslide happened in Surte. This natural event caused a lot of damage. Sadly, one person died, and 30 houses were completely destroyed. Many more houses had to be moved, which meant 450 people lost their homes. The landslide also blocked the river, which was important for ships traveling through the area.

Surte has been home to some notable individuals who made a mark in different fields.

Alexander Samuelson and the Coca-Cola Bottle

Alexander Samuelson was from Surte. He is famous for his connection to the legendary contour Coca-Cola bottle. While he wasn't the original designer, his name was on the 1915 design patent for this iconic bottle.

Gideon Ståhlberg, Chess Grandmaster

Gideon Ståhlberg was an international Grand Master of chess. He was born in Surte and is also buried there. In the 1940s, he was considered one of the strongest chess players in the world.

Sports in Surte

Surte is also known for its sports, especially the winter sport of bandy.

Surte BK and Bandy

Surte is home to the bandy club called Surte BK. Bandy is a team sport played on ice, similar to ice hockey. Surte BK built one of the first indoor bandy arenas in Sweden. This arena was also the first of its kind in the Götaland region.

Surte and Bohus

The village of Bohus is located about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) north of Surte's center. Over time, Bohus has grown and connected with Surte. Because of this, in official statistics, Surte and Bohus are counted as one single village.
