Susan Hinckley Greenough Bradley (1851–1929) was an American artist. She was famous for her beautiful watercolor landscape paintings. She also created many detailed portrait drawings.
Early Life and Education
Susan Hinckley was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1851. Her parents were Samuel Lyman Hinckley and Anne Cutler Hinckley. Susan also had a younger brother named Robert Cutler Hinckley, who became a painter too.
Susan began her art studies in Boston. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts. Later, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She also learned from famous artists like Abbott Handerson Thayer and William Merritt Chase. She even studied in Rome, Italy, with Edward Darley Boit.
Her Artistic Work
Susan Hinckley Bradley's paintings are displayed in several important places. You can find her art at Harvard University and the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her works are also part of the collections at the Smith College Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Many private collectors also own her paintings.
In 1893, Susan Bradley showed one of her paintings at a very big event. It was called the World’s Columbian Exposition, a huge world's fair held in Chicago. Her painting was titled Mount Monadnock.
Later Years
In 1879, Susan married Leverett Bradley, who was a minister. She helped him by editing his writings. She worked on his memoir, which was a book about his experiences during the American Civil War. The book was called Leverett Bradley: A Soldier-Boy’s Letters, 1862-1865, A Man’s Work in the Ministry. It was printed in Boston in 1905.
Susan Hinckley Bradley passed away in Boston in 1929. She left behind a legacy of beautiful art.
