Susanna Kaysen was born on November 11, 1948. She is an American author. She is most famous for her book, Girl, Interrupted, which came out in 1993.

About Susanna Kaysen

Susanna Kaysen grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her mother was Annette Neutra Kaysen. Her father, Carl Kaysen, was an economist and a professor at MIT. He also advised President John F. Kennedy. Her family is Jewish.

Early Life and Education

Susanna went to high school at the Commonwealth School in Boston. She also attended the Cambridge School of Weston. In 1967, she went to McLean Hospital. She stayed there for 18 months to get help with her mental health. This experience later inspired her famous book.

Her Famous Book: Girl, Interrupted

In 1993, Susanna Kaysen wrote her memoir, Girl, Interrupted. A memoir is a true story about a part of someone's life. Her book shared her experiences from her time at McLean Hospital.

The book was later made into a movie. In the film, actress Winona Ryder played Susanna Kaysen.

Life After the Hospital

Susanna Kaysen has one sister. She is divorced. For a time, she lived in the Faroe Islands. This experience inspired another one of her books, called Far Afield.
