Sushilkumar Sambhaji Shinde, born on September 4, 1941, is an important Indian politician and a former police officer from the state of Maharashtra. He held several big jobs in the Indian government. He was the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Power in the government led by Manmohan Singh. He also served as the Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha, which is like being the main leader for the ruling party in India's Parliament. Before these roles, he was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, leading the state government from 2003 to 2004.

Early Life and Education
Sushilkumar Shinde was born in Solapur on September 4, 1941. His parents were Sambhaji Rao Shinde and Sakhu Bai. He studied arts at Dayanand College in Solapur. Later, he earned a law degree (LLB) from ILS Law College and New Law College, which are part of the University of Bombay in Maharashtra.
Starting His Career
Sushilkumar Shinde began his career in 1957. He worked as a bailiff in the Sessions court of Solapur until 1965. After that, he joined the Maharashtra Police as a constable. He then served for six years in the Maharashtra CID as a sub-inspector of police.
Political Journey
Joining the Congress Party
In 1971, Sushilkumar Shinde became a member of the Congress Party. This was the start of his long political career.
State and National Roles
He won many elections for the Maharashtra state assembly. He was elected in 1974, 1980, 1985, and 1990. He also served in the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of India's Parliament, from 1992 to 1998.
In 1999, he helped manage the election campaign for the Congress chairperson, Sonia Gandhi. In 2002, he ran for the post of Vice-President of India but did not win.
Chief Minister and Governor
From 2003 to 2004, Shinde served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. This is the head of the state government. After that, he was appointed the Governor of Andhra Pradesh in October 2004. He held this important position until January 2006.
Union Minister and Lok Sabha Leader
Shinde was elected to the Rajya Sabha again in 2006. He then became the Power Minister of India, a role he held from 2006 to 2012. In 2012, he was appointed the Home Minister of India. This is a very important role, dealing with national security and law and order.
He also became the Leader of the Lok Sabha in August 2012. This happened after his predecessor, Pranab Mukherjee, became the President of India.
Power Grid Incident
During a big power outage in northern India in 2012, Shinde was the Power Minister. He explained that such blackouts can happen in other countries too. Officials said the power grid could not handle the high demand for electricity during the hot summer.
Recent Elections
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Shinde ran as the Congress party candidate. However, he was defeated by Mr. Sharad Bansode from the BJP party. He also ran in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Solapur but was defeated again. He has stated that the 2019 elections were his last Lok Sabha elections.
Family Life
Sushilkumar Shinde married Ujwala Shinde on May 1, 1970. They have three daughters. One of their daughters, Praniti Shinde, is also a politician and serves as a MP for Solapur, Maharashtra.
Awards and Recognitions
Sushilkumar Shinde has received many awards and honors throughout his life:
- In 1977, he was chosen as one of the Ten Noteworthy Youth of the country by Indian Jaycees.
- In 1996, he received the "National Citizen Award" as a Best Member of Parliament from Mother Teresa.
- In 2003, he was recognized as one of the best Chief Ministers by India Today magazine.
- He was also the Chancellor of Tilak Maharashtra Vidhyapeeth for several years.
- He has been awarded honorary Doctor of Literature (D. Lit.) degrees from different universities.
- In 2009, he received the "Navshakti Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar."
