What Does the Name Sutatausa Mean?
The name Sutatausa comes from the ancient Chibcha language. In this language, "Sutatausa" means "small tribute."
A Look at Sutatausa's History
Before the Spanish arrived, the area where Sutatausa is now was home to the Muisca people. The Muisca had a group of communities called the Muisca Confederation. Sutatausa was part of the lands ruled by the zipa, who was a powerful leader based in a place called Bacatá (which is now Bogotá).
The modern town of Sutatausa was officially started on June 24, 1537. This was done by Hernán Pérez de Quesada, who was the brother of the famous Spanish explorer Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. On the very same day, Hernán Pérez de Quesada also founded another town called Tenza.
How Sutatausa Makes Money
The main ways people in Sutatausa earn a living are through agriculture (farming), dairy farming (raising cows for milk), and small-scale mining. Tourism is also becoming an important way for the town to make money, as visitors come to see its history and natural beauty.
