Sutherland, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sutherland is a small, quiet place in the southeastern part of Johnson County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county area.

Sutherland is located along Missouri Route 23. It's about eleven miles south of a town called Knob Noster. If you travel just two miles further south from Sutherland, you'll reach another small community named Bowen, right on the border between Johnson and Henry counties.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community like Sutherland is a group of homes or buildings that are not officially part of a city or town. This means they don't have a mayor or city council. Instead, the county government handles services like roads, police, and fire protection for these areas. It's a common way for smaller groups of people to live together without forming a full-fledged town.

History of Sutherland

Sutherland was officially planned and created in 1898. It was named after a person called D. L. Sutherland, who owned the land where the community was built. Imagine someone deciding to set up a new place for people to live, and they name it after themselves!

A post office was opened in Sutherland a little earlier, in 1897. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for several years before it closed down in 1912.
