The Suzie River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Mégiscane River. A tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river or lake. The Suzie River is located in the Senneterre area. This is part of the La Vallée-de-l'Or Regional County Municipality. It is also in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

The Suzie River flows through many townships. These include Jalobert, Bourgmont, and Bongard. Its path was changed by dams. Now it also flows through Lake Brécourt. The river runs through forests. It is north-east of the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve. It is also west of the Gouin Reservoir. The main activity here is forestry. Tourism and recreation are also important. The river usually freezes from mid-December to mid-April.

The Suzie River is about 71.4 km (44.4 mi) long. It starts at Lake Boulevard. This lake is 442 metres (1,450 ft) high. A mountain peak of 470 metres (1,540 ft) is nearby. The river flows north from Lake Boulevard. It passes through several lakes. These include Bibeault Lake and Lake Gertrude. It also flows through Suzie Lake and Hazelwood Lake.

Where Does the Suzie River Flow?

The Suzie River flows north for a long distance. It winds through marshy areas. It also meets the Chênevert River. Further along, it crosses the Canadian National Railway. It then flows into Lac Lacoursière. This lake is 418 metres (1,371 ft) high. It is 8.3 kilometres (5.2 mi) long. Hudson Creek flows into Lac Lacoursière.

The river continues north. It passes through Ganas Lake. This lake is 412 metres (1,352 ft) high. It then reaches Lake Brécourt. This lake is 405 metres (1,329 ft) high. A dam here changes the river's path. It sends water eastward to Du Poète Lake (Mégiscane River). From there, the water goes to the Gouin Reservoir. The Suzie River then flows through Cedar Lake. Finally, it joins Du Poète Lake (Mégiscane River).

Parent Lake (Abitibi) flows into the Bell River. The Bell River then flows into Matagami Lake. Finally, Matagami Lake flows into the Nottaway River. The Nottaway River empties into James Bay.

History of the Suzie River

In 1948, the Government of Quebec approved a big project. The Shawinigan Water and Power Company wanted to make the Gouin Reservoir larger. This would help increase the water flow in the Saint-Maurice River. More water meant more electricity could be made.

To do this, they changed the direction of the Mégiscane River and the Suzie River. These rivers naturally flowed north towards James Bay. But the company built dams and canals. This made the rivers flow south instead. They now flow towards the St. Lawrence River through the Saint-Maurice River. This was a major change to the natural flow of these rivers.
