Early Career and Radio Start
After finishing school and military service, Jerring became a freelance journalist. He wrote for a local newspaper called Vadstena Läns Tidning. In 1921, he moved to another newspaper, Östgöta-bladet. There, he used the pen name Jerker Ring.
In 1923, Jerring started working for a publishing house. That same year, he also began working for their radio show. His first time on the radio was on 2 December 1923.
Becoming a Radio Star
When Radiotjänst (now known as Sveriges Radio) began broadcasting on 1 January 1925, Jerring became a main presenter. He quickly became the most popular radio personality in Sweden. Many people knew him as Farbror Sven, which means Uncle Sven.
He was known for his excellent and knowledgeable reports, especially about sports. He commentated on the Vasaloppet, a famous cross-country ski race, every year starting in 1925.
Barnens brevlåda - A Long-Running Show
One of Jerring's most famous shows was Barnens brevlåda (The Children's Mailbox). It first aired in 1925 and became one of the longest-running radio programs in Swedish history.
When Jerring ended the show on 11 June 1972, it had broadcast 1785 episodes. At that time, it was the world's longest-running radio program. In 1977, he received a special award called the Illis quorum for his work.
Sven Jerring passed away in Stockholm in April 1979. He was buried in Norra begravningsplatsen.
Jerringfonden and Jerringpriset
On Sven Jerring's 60th birthday in 1955, his friends and colleagues collected money for him. With this money, he created a foundation. It was called the Stiftelsen Sven Jerrings Fond för fysiskt och psykiskt missgynnade barn. This means 'The Sven Jerring Foundation for physically and mentally disadvantaged children'.
Today, it is known simply as Jerringfonden ('the Jerring Foundation'). So much money has been given to the foundation over the years that it can now give away five million Swedish kronor every year. This money helps children through scholarships and research grants.
The Radiosportens Jerringpris is an annual award given in Jerring's memory. It honors an athlete who has done very well in their sport. The winner is chosen by people voting for their favorite.
