What Malung is Like
Malung has a special school called Malungs Folkhögskola. It is about two kilometers south of the town. This school teaches unique subjects like folk music, dance, mountain climbing, and blacksmithing. Did you know that the very first DreamHack event, a huge computer festival, happened right here in Malung?
Every year in July, Malung hosts a big dance festival called Svenska dansbandsveckan. It's a very popular event! More than 3,000 caravans come to town, and over 80 bands perform. Around 50,000 tickets are sold each year for this fun festival.
Malung's History
The first time Malung was written about was in a story from the 13th century. This story is called the Sverre Saga. But people think that things like making mill wheels in the area started much, much earlier.
Early Mentions
Malung was mentioned in the 13th-century story "Sverres saga". This story tells about the Norwegian king Sverre Sigurdsson. In the year 1177, he rode through a town called "Molung". The story says the local people were friendly and helpful. They followed an old Nordic religion, which was common at that time. This makes Malung the first place in Dalarna to be written about in a book!
The Ancient Quarry
About five kilometers southeast of Malung, there is an old millstone quarry. A quarry is a place where stones are dug out of the ground. This quarry is very long, about 1,700 meters! It has been used since the early Viking Age. Scientists have found things there that are from the late 700s.
Millstones from this quarry have been found in many places. They have been found as far south as Lund and in the Mälardalen area. They were also found in most parts of Svealand and even in Norway. This shows how important the quarry was for trade long ago. Since 2003, the quarry has been a special cultural reserve.
Leather Capital
In more recent times, Malung became known as the "leather capital" of Sweden. It has a strong leather industry with several tanneries. Tanneries are places where animal skins are made into leather.
Malung also has a long tradition of "skinners." These were groups of people who worked with leather. They were merchants, tailors, and tanners. They would travel between villages to make and sell leather items. They made things like animal pelts, leather jackets, and even shoes. In return, they would get a place to stay and a small payment.
Climate in Malung
Malung has a climate that is called "subarctic." This means it's usually quite cool. It's not far from a "humid continental climate," which has more varied temperatures. Compared to places further east in Dalarna, like Falun, Malung generally has chillier temperatures. The very cold days in winter can be much colder here than in other places this far south in Sweden.
