Svitoch (Ukrainian: Світоч, lit. 'beacon' or 'torch', 'guiding light'') is a well-known Ukrainian company. It makes many kinds of sweets. The company is based in Lviv, Ukraine. Since 1998, it has been owned by Nestlé, a big food company. Svitoch produces tasty treats like chocolate, chocolate candies, lollipops, and other sweets.
A Sweet History
The story of Svitoch began a long time ago in the 19th century. In the city of Lviv, there were many small sweet makers. One of the first was a candy shop called "Branka," which opened in 1882. This is the year Svitoch traces its history back to.
Over the years, more sweet factories opened in Lviv. In 1904, a group called the Society of Confectioners for Halychyna and Bukovyna was formed. By 1910, Lviv was even called the "second chocolate capital" after Bern, Switzerland!
How Svitoch Was Formed
After some time, many of these smaller sweet companies joined together. In 1962, they officially formed the company we know today as Svitoch. During the time of the Soviet Union, Svitoch was known as one of the best sweet makers. It was famous alongside other big chocolate factories like Rot Front and Babaevsky.
Modern Sweet Making
In the mid-1990s, Nestlé bought Svitoch. This helped the company grow even more. Svitoch started making new versions of popular candies. For example, they changed the name of "Strela" candy to "Stozhary."
By 2015, Svitoch was a very modern factory. It used advanced technology to make its sweets. They had special machines for making waffles, chocolate bars, and candies. They also had new automated systems for preparing chocolate. Since 2018, Nestlé has owned all of Svitoch's shares. This means Nestlé fully owns the company.
