Sweet Lips (sometimes spelled "Sweetlips") is a small, unincorporated community located in Chester County, Tennessee, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but it still has a name and people living there.
History of Sweet Lips
The first people to settle in the area of Sweet Lips arrived in the 1820s. Over the years, this community has become known for its very interesting and unusual name.
How Sweet Lips Got Its Name
There are a few different stories about how Sweet Lips got its unique name.
- One story says that early settlers, or maybe even thirsty soldiers from the American Civil War, found a creek with water that tasted so good they said it was "sweet to the lips."
- Another idea is that the community was named after a special gun. This gun, also called "Sweet Lips," was used by a soldier from Tennessee. This soldier fought in the American Revolutionary War and used the gun to defeat Patrick Ferguson, a leader of the Loyalists. Loyalists were people who stayed loyal to the British during the war.
- A third story suggests the name came from one of George Washington's dogs, who was also named Sweet Lips.
Because of these fun stories, Sweet Lips is often included on lists of places with very unusual names.
Life in Sweet Lips
