Swisshome is a small, unincorporated community located in Lane County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. An unincorporated community is a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the county.

Swisshome is situated along the Siuslaw River, which is a beautiful waterway. It lies northeast of another community called Mapleton, and you can reach it by traveling on Oregon Route 36.

The Story Behind Swisshome's Name

The name "Swisshome" was chosen to honor a local family who came from Switzerland. It's a way to remember their heritage and contribution to the area.

When Swisshome Began

The community officially got its start when the Swisshome post office was established in the year 1902. A post office is a place where mail is sorted and sent out, and it often marks the beginning of a recognized community.

Transportation and Railways

A train track, known as the Coos Bay Rail Link, passes right through Swisshome. This railway is important because it helps move goods and materials to and from different places. Trains are a key part of transportation for many communities.

Historic Covered Bridges

Near Swisshome, there are two very special bridges called covered bridges. These are the Deadwood Creek Bridge and the Wildcat Creek Bridge.

Why Covered Bridges Are Special

Covered bridges are unique because they have roofs and walls, just like a building. This design helps protect the wooden structure of the bridge from rain, snow, and sun. Protecting the wood makes the bridges last much longer.

National Register of Historic Places

Both the Deadwood Creek Bridge and the Wildcat Creek Bridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites that are worth preserving. They tell a story about how people built things in the past.
