What is Swissveg?
Swissveg is the largest community in Switzerland for people who are vegetarian or vegan. They have their main office in Winterthur, a city in Switzerland. The current president of Swissveg is Renato Pichler. He also helps lead the European Vegetarian Union (EVU).
How Swissveg Started
Swissveg was created on August 8, 1993. It began in a place called Sennwald and was first known as the Swiss Association for Vegetarianism. Later, on March 3, 2014, the group changed its name to Swissveg.
Swissveg is an active member of bigger groups like the EVU and the International Vegetarian Union. They also work closely with an organization called ProVeg in Germany.
The V-Label
Swissveg helped create the V-Label along with the EVU. This special label helps you know if a product is vegetarian or vegan. Swissveg checks which products and services in Switzerland can use this label.
You can find products with the V-Label in many big grocery stores in Switzerland. For example, stores like Migros and Coop (Switzerland) sell them. About 350 companies in Switzerland use the V-Label on their products.
Fun Events and Festivals
Swissveg puts on several events every year. These often include vegetarian and vegan festivals.
Veganmania Festivals
The Veganmania festivals have been happening since 2011. These are big events where people can try vegan food, learn about vegan living, and enjoy music.
- In 2016, the Veganmania festival in Aarau had about 5,000 visitors. This made it the biggest vegan festival in Switzerland at the time.
- Before 2016, the festivals were held in Winterthur. However, they moved to Aarau because Winterthur didn't have enough space for all the people who wanted to come.
- In 2017, Veganmania was held for the first time in Gossau, St. Gallen. This event featured 60 different stands.
Other Important Days
Swissveg also promotes other special days that encourage people to eat less meat or go vegan.
