Sydney Alexander Anderson, born on April 23, 1949, is a politician from Northern Ireland. He was a member of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). He served as a local councillor for the Portadown area on the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council from 2019 to 2023. Before that, he was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for the Upper Bann area from 2010 to 2017.

Sydney Anderson's Political Journey

Sydney Anderson has had a long career in local and regional politics in Northern Ireland. He started as a local councillor and later became a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Starting in Local Government

Anderson first became a councillor for the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) in 2001. He was elected to the Craigavon Borough Council to represent the Portadown area.

Changing Political Parties

In 2003, Anderson decided to leave the UUP. He ran for the Northern Ireland Assembly as an independent candidate, meaning he didn't belong to any political party at that time.

Before the 2005 local elections, he joined the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). He successfully kept his council seat in Portadown while representing his new party.

Serving as Mayor

During his time on the Craigavon Borough Council, Sydney Anderson also had the important roles of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. These roles involve leading council meetings and representing the local area.

Moving to the Northern Ireland Assembly

In July 2010, Anderson was chosen to become a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA). He took over the seat for Upper Bann from David Simpson.

Anderson was re-elected to the Craigavon Borough Council in 2011. He received the most votes in the Portadown area during that election.

Working in the Assembly

While serving in the Assembly, Anderson was part of several important groups and committees. These included the All Party Group on Neurology, the Public Accounts Committee, and the Committee for Justice. He also worked on committees for Social Development, Employment and Learning, and Standards and Privileges.

Anderson decided not to run for re-election in the 2017 Assembly election.

Returning to Local Council

After leaving the Assembly, Anderson was elected again to local government in 2019. He became a councillor for Portadown on the new Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. He continued in this role until he retired as a councillor in 2023.
