Jonathan Buckley, born on 19 July 1991, is a politician from Northern Ireland. He is a member of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Since 2017, he has been a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for the Upper Bann area. He currently helps the DUP with topics like business, energy, and working with trade unions.
Early Life
Jonathan Buckley grew up in the area outside Portadown. He still lives there today.
Political Journey
Before becoming an MLA, Jonathan Buckley was a local councillor. He represented the Portadown area on the Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council. As a councillor, he worked on different committees. These included groups focused on economic development, how the council is run, and planning decisions.
Becoming an MLA
In 2017, Jonathan Buckley was elected as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA). He took over from a long-serving politician named Sydney Anderson. During his election campaign, he encouraged people in Upper Bann to vote. He also asked them to support other candidates from parties that wanted to keep Northern Ireland part of the United Kingdom.
On 3 March 2017, he was announced as the winner. This made him the youngest person elected for the DUP at that time.
Other Roles and Programs
Jonathan Buckley has also taken part in important leadership programs. He joined the British Council Future Leaders Connect Programme at Cambridge University. This program connects future policy leaders from around the world.
He was also chosen by the United States Government for a special program. It was called the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). He represented the United Kingdom in a program about global economic cooperation.
In 2024, Jonathan Buckley was chosen to run for the DUP in the 2024 United Kingdom general election. He stood for the Lagan Valley area. He said he was running to put the country first. He also wanted to make sure people who support Northern Ireland staying in the UK could unite behind one candidate. In the election, he came in second place.
Personal Life
Outside of his political work, Jonathan Buckley enjoys several hobbies. He is very interested in pigeon racing. He also likes country sports and football.
On 1 July 2022, Jonathan Buckley got married to Jill Porter in Lisburn.
