Sylvester became an official town on April 11, 1952. It was named after one of the first families who settled there.

Sylvester is found at coordinates 38.010370 degrees North and -81.559626 degrees West. The town stretches across both sides of the Big Coal River. However, most of its shops and homes are on the eastern side of the river.

Other nearby towns include Whitesville to the southeast. The communities of Orgas and Seth are just north. West Virginia Route 3 (Coal River Road) runs through Sylvester.
