Sylvester is a famous cartoon character from the Warner Bros. company. He is a black and white cat, often called a "tuxedo cat" because of his fur colors. Sylvester is best known for always trying to catch Tweety Bird.
He first appeared in a cartoon called Life with Feathers on March 24, 1945. The talented Friz Freleng created him. Many different actors have given Sylvester his voice over the years, including Mel Blanc and Joe Alaskey.
Who is Sylvester?
Sylvester's full name is Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr. His name is a fun play on Felis silvestris, which is the scientific name for a wild cat. Even though his name sounds like a wild cat, Sylvester is a house cat.
He is very popular! TV Guide magazine once listed him as one of the top 50 best cartoon characters. He was ranked #33, sharing the spot with Tweety.
Sylvester's Family
Sylvester has a son named Sylvester Junior. His son first appeared in the cartoon Pop 'im Pop in 1949.
In many cartoons, Sylvester Junior is with his dad. Sylvester often tries to catch a baby kangaroo named Hippety Hopper. Sylvester usually thinks Hippety Hopper is a giant mouse! He tries to catch the kangaroo to impress his son, but it never works out.
